The Good Samaritan Bible Craft

Jesus told the story of a man beaten and left on the road. A priest walked past. A Levite walked past. But then came a Samaritan – someone the Jews despised and rejected as unclean. And yet, in the face of that prejudice against his own people, the Samaritan showed mercy.

This craft features cutouts of all the characters against a rocky scene, inviting your children to roleplay the story and live it out. As they move the figures, they can see the Samaritan’s actions unfold: he sacrifices his own comfort, giving up his donkey to carry the injured man. He sacrifices his own sustenance – his wine, which was precious for hydration. He offers his own money without expecting to be repaid. And the Samaritan came back to check on the man, to see if he was in good health and to pay any unpaid debt.

When Jesus finished the story, He asked: “Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man?” The answer was clear: “The one who had mercy on him.” And Jesus said, “Go and do likewise.” (Luke 10:37)

Mercy is not deserved, and it’s not something expected to be paid back. Showing mercy to another person is to show the heart of God. Help your children understand that being merciful – especially to those who are different, rejected, or in need – is what it means to follow Jesus.

Luke 10:25-37

Instructions

The good samaritan craft
  • Colour and cut out.
  • Cut down the ridge in the background so the robbers can hide behind it.
  • Tell the story using the characters! Use the story for teachable moments. Ask questions like, “Why do you think the Samaritan helped the man when the other two religious men didn’t?” “Have you ever not wanted to help someone? Let’s talk about that.” “Have you ever been hurt by someone? Did you show them kindness or did you want to hurt them back?”
